Ex motocross rider Jack Rowland is a quick learner and has shown great potential in only a short space of time. After making a few small mistakes at the opening sprint event a couple of weeks ago, Jack was keen to show his speed on what was his first timecard Enduro. Riding on what is essentially a standard 2011 TE250, the Yorkshire teenager dominated the Expert class from start to finish, winning not only the E1 class but also taking the overall Expert victory against more experienced riders on larger capacity E2 and E3 class bikes.
Sixteen year old Robert Johnson also on TE250, was taken under the MPS awning last year and he is already showing great promise with a convincing win at the Muntjac. Leaving his competition for dead in both his special tests, Robert finished the day over seventeen seconds ahead of second placed man, Declan Halliwell and set a pace which would have seen him beat a number of regular expert riders.
Meanwhile in the championship class New Zealander Jason Davies in his first British Championship event was riding well early in the day, setting a test time which would have seen him finish mid pack overall. As the day progressed and the check times tightened, Jason began to struggle with the set-up of his 449 and couldn't match his earlier pace, dropping down the results table. With Jason having limited time on the bike and with him being new to the British Enduro scene, nobody in the team was expecting a win and there are now three weeks of testing planned before the next Husqvarna ACU British Sprint Enduro round in Wales.
Also struggling on the day was Expert class rider Joe Deakin who is still feeling the effects of a nasty virus picked up before Christmas, and was forced to retire before the final lap. Joes early day pace was good, placing his TE250 in the top 5 but he physically couldn't finish the day.
Jason Davis "Although by the end of the day I placed a long way down the table, I'm happy with my performance. My pace was good overall and I feel fit which gives me confidence heading into the next two rounds of the BESC. Wyn has proved what the machine is capable of, all I need now is some more time on the bike and a little luck!"
Robert Johnson "I'm really pleased with today, I felt fresh from the start right until the end and the team's hard work is starting to show. Although he course was tough and got pretty rutted in places I enjoyed the event and can't wait for my next outing. Thanks to everyone who helped me today, my TE250 was unstoppable!"
Jack Rowland "I'm really happy with my result today! There was a bit of confusion over my time card at one point but I just rode for the win and I'm pleased to have achieved the overall Expert class victory as well as the E1 class win! I must say a big thank you to MPS and everybody who has helped me."
Complementing the efforts of the MPS team was Freestyle Bikes backed Wyn Hughes, who dominated the Veteran class from the word go and ended the end at the top of the results table. Both of his test times were twenty seconds faster than his closest competitor showing that Wyn has lost none of the skill which made him multi times British Champion. Onboard his TE449 the enduro legend was the only veteran to drop just three minutes during his tight check, with the rest of field dropping four minutes or more.
A really positive start to the British Enduro Championship for MPS and a great one for Husqvarna taking Clubman, Expert and Veterans class wins at what was considered to be a very tough event, thanks to the combined efforts of MPS and Freestyle. Next outing for the MPS team is rounds 3 and 4 of the Husqvarna ACU British Sprint Enduro on 19th / 20th March being held right on the Welsh border, just outside Monmouth.
