    Leaving the city behind:
Three friends, two days, one epic weekend

Sometimes the best moments in life are unplanned – just a spontaneous idea between friends, their motorcycles, and the open road. For Stefan, Julia, and Guillem, Friday afternoon marked the beginning of something unforgettable: a weekend escape from the city, trading the hum of Barcelona traffic for the wild freedom of the Pyrenees and beyond.

The plan was simple: finish work, grab gear, and ride northwest along the iconic Transpirenaica route – 830 km of winding roads, high mountain passes, and quiet villages – destination: Hossegor, France. Known for its surf culture, laid-back cafés, and unbeatable sunsets, the seaside town would be the perfect reward at the end of a two-day journey built on freedom, friendship, and shared experience.

With the workweek finally over and spirits high, the trio rolled out of Stefan’s garage and met at their usual corner café for one last city coffee. The mood was light, filled with the kind of anticipation only a trip like this brings. Outside the café, the sun began to dip low behind the city skyline. Helmets clicked shut. Engines hummed to life. Barcelona slowly disappeared in their mirrors.

The sun sets, painting the ocean in golden light. At this viewpoint before Tassa de Mar, the three friends begin to feel the spirit of the trip – something truly special is unfolding. Picture: Dominik Buchner

Leaving the traffic behind, the group hugged the coast, heading towards Tossa de Mar. With the ocean stretching endlessly on one side of the road and the thrill of discovery on the other, a quick beachside stop to enjoy a warming coffee became their first true feeling of freedom. It set the mood: spontaneous, breathtaking, and good conversations that made them feel alive and excited for what was next. After leaving footprints in the sand, they returned to their machines that were all still slightly warm from the initial ride north. With their helmets fastened and engines started, a chorus of machines being clicked into gear signalled the start of the next leg of the ride.

From there, the mountains called. The road twisted and climbed through Cadaqués, then up to Sispony. Sweeping curves turned into narrow village streets. The Pyrenees stretched out ahead like an endless invitation. The bikes moved as one, carving through the terrain with ease, while the riders soaked in each moment – a new view around every bend, a new story shared at every stop.

Nightfall brought warmth and laughter over shared tapas and local wine in the small town of San Juan de Plan – a place they hadn’t planned to visit, but one that instantly felt like a perfect detour. Stories from the road were exchanged under soft light and tired stars, the trio already knowing this was a trip they’d remember for years.

Saturday brought a new rhythm – the easy confidence that comes once the journey is underway. They left early, the air still cool, their focus now set on Pamplona. Along the way, Castelflorite and Jaca offered irresistible detours. Each one looked like a living postcard with their cobbled streets, homemade food, and the warm-hearted locals greeting everyone with a friendly smile.

By the time they reached Pamplona just before sunset, the day’s highlights were still fresh in their minds. Over dinner, favourite corners, perfect views, and unforgettable stretches of tarmac were discussed in detail, with each rider recounting their own version of the day. There’s a special kind of closeness that comes from a trip like this – something about sharing a journey that bonds people in a way few other things can.

Sunday morning started early with alarms breaking the silence. Engines soon come to life, and the first light of the day leads their ride towards the Atlantic coast. They set off, and in just a few hours’ time the Atlantic would come into view. The final push north had its own magic: a golden sunrise, quiet roads, and the promise of the coast ahead. As the beach came in to sight alongside the sounds of the ocean, it would soon be time for a new kind of riding.

Hossegor welcomed them with sunshine and a sea breeze. After refuelling at a beachside café, boards were rented and waves caught. There was something poetic about trading motorcycle boots for bare feet, and the roar of the road for the swell of the surf. When the surfboards needed to be returned, the trio didn’t say too much – they didn’t need to. The sound of the sea was all they needed to hear. The whole weekend had delivered everything it promised and more.

The feeling of pure satisfaction – arriving in Hossegor, filled with countless memories and a heart full of new experiences shared with friends. Proud of the journey, their camaraderie, and the moments created along the way. Picture: Dominik Buchner

Before heading back, a final stop at the Deus Coffee Shop became a moment of reflection. Drinks in hand, they sat in the sun, letting the weekend settle in. The laughter was softer now, the smiles tired but content. The return to Barcelona would be quicker – a direct route home, pure satisfaction on the fast way, and chasing the fading sun towards the horizon. It gave the friends time to look back on the shared experience. The open roads, the ocean breezes, and the time well spent on two wheels. All moments that will stay with them long after the ride.

Once back in Barcelona and with Stefan’s garage door closing, everyone quietly reflects on the journey. This was more than a road trip. More than a weekend escape. It was a reminder that with the right people, the right mindset, and a motorcycle that invites adventure, you don’t need to wait for the perfect time – you just need to go.
