MXGP of Sweden: Everts takes second overall as de Wolf progresses in Uddevalla

Liam Everts returned to the MX2 podium with a superb double runner-up finish at the MXGP of Sweden, securing second overall for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing at round 15 of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Set amongst the rocky hillsides of Uddevalla, the 1,645-metre Glimminge Motorstadion welcomed a record 28,500 fans for a spectacular weekend of racing as the championship entered its final quarter.

Everts showed strong pace from Saturday, charging to second in the MX2 qualifying race before carrying that momentum into Sunday.

Starting second in race one, the Belgian immediately settled behind leader Sacha Coenen and remained firmly in contention throughout the moto. As the gap fluctuated, Everts repeatedly closed back onto his rival and continued to apply pressure, eventually crossing the line just 1.2 seconds behind in second.

Race two followed a remarkably similar pattern. Everts quickly moved into second and again chased Coenen at the head of the field. Despite traffic adding to the challenge, he stayed within striking distance throughout the 18-lap race and pushed all the way to the flag, finishing just 2.4 seconds behind.

His 2-2 scorecard secured 44 Grand Prix points and second overall, completing an impressive 2-2-2 weekend across qualifying and both motos. More importantly, the pace and consistency marked another clear step forward for Everts as he returned to the Grand Prix podium.

In MXGP, Kay de Wolf continued to build through his rookie season. Following an incident during Saturday’s qualifying race, the Dutchman started seventh in race one before slipping to 12th during the early stages. He regrouped well and fought his way back to 10th at the finish.

De Wolf took another step forward in race two, finding a stronger rhythm and charging to sixth at the chequered flag. While his 10-6 results for eighth overall did not fully reflect the progress made across the weekend, de Wolf left Sweden encouraged by both his riding and improved fitness.

Adding another highlight to the weekend, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager Rasmus Jorgensen swapped the pit box for the start gate to represent the team in Uddevalla’s special holeshot challenge. Lining up against a host of motocross legends including Joel Smets, Jorgen Nilsson, Anders Eriksson and Ben Townley, Jorgensen came out on top to claim a memorable victory for the team.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing now heads directly to the sand of Arnhem for the MXGP of the Netherlands (23 August), where de Wolf will line up for his home Grand Prix as the championship enters its final four rounds.

#74 - Kay de Wolf: “I actually feel like I learned a lot this weekend. I didn’t have the best start to the weekend, but I showed some really good riding, so I’m actually very happy with my performance overall. The results don’t really show how much we learned or how well we rode, but it was definitely a positive weekend. Fitness-wise, I felt a lot better as well, which is another big positive. Now the focus moves straight to the sand at Arnhem in five days’ time, so I’m really looking forward to my home GP.”

#26 - Liam Everts: “It was a little frustrating because I felt like I had really good pace all weekend. We were second in qualifying and then went 2-2 in the races, and in both motos I was able to catch back up to Sacha and stay quite close to him. I just couldn’t find a way around. He was riding really good and wasn’t making any mistakes, so hats off to him. Of course I would have liked to win, but I’m really happy with my riding and with the progress we made this weekend. I think we nailed a lot of things and it feels like a good step in the right direction. We came a little bit short this time, but second overall and being back on the podium is definitely positive.”
